The biggest mistake that I see many businesses make is failing to optimize their marketing funnel by channel of traffic.

What most people will do is they’ll want to scale their business because they get one traffic source working, let’s say for example, they get Google Adwords working to their website. Then what they want to do is starting Adíing in Facebook and LinkedIn and Bing ads, and when they start adding these things in, they’re conversion numbers drop like a rock.

The reason for that is every traffic source is completely unique and so you have to, when you are expanding and scaling out to other traffic sources, optimize your entire funnel by that traffic source.

For example, I have one client who is a dentist in Australia, and he was optimized for Google and so when we started running tests on his site, 10% of the Google traffic would end up becoming leads for him. We started running Facebook and we ran the test on the Facebook traffic into the same funnel and that was only converting at about 4%.

Now the cost per lead was still good but there was a lot of room for improvement there. We did some quick optimization based on how the traffic was moving through the site from Facebook and we were able to bump up the conversion on the Facebook traffic all the way to 15% while maintaining the 10% on the Google traffic, because we kept the Google traffic separated and his website optimized for that channel.

You need to look at each channel of traffic as an individual source of traffic and look at adjusting your funnel and driving that traffic through the funnel specific to the channel if you want to be able to scale and have success all the way through.

One thing that you need to understand is that online advertising is becoming increasingly difficult to pull off successfully using the traditional methods because people are simply becoming blind to them.
